Two roads up to Asheville

There are two common ways a car hauler gets from Charlotte to Asheville. One heads north to Hickory and picks up I-40 west through Morganton and Marion, then climbs the Old Fort grade to Black Mountain. The other follows US-74 west past Shelby and Rutherfordton and joins I-26 for the climb up through Saluda toward Hendersonville. The carrier chooses based on the other cars on the trailer and where yours is going in Buncombe or Henderson County.

On the mountain end we deliver to Asheville, West Asheville, Weaverville, Black Mountain, Fletcher, Hendersonville and Brevard. Some mountain addresses sit up steep, narrow or gravel roads that a full-size hauler cannot climb. If yours is one of them, say so when you ask for a quote so the carrier can plan where to meet you.

Who ships a car up the mountain

Dealers. Western North Carolina stores trade with lots in Charlotte, Gastonia and Hickory when a buyer wants a trim or color that is sitting down the hill. Auction buys go up I-40, and Charlotte stores send sold cars to customers who live in the mountains. Both legs of a trade can go on one order.

People moving to the mountains. A lot of our Asheville orders are personal: a family relocating to Buncombe County, a retiree who drove one car up and needs the second one shipped, or someone keeping a car at a cabin or second home. Students at UNC Asheville, and families with a student at Western Carolina further west, ship cars at the start and end of the school year.

How a Charlotte to Asheville order runs

A person on our desk quotes every mountain move. There is no price table and no instant quote. Send the Charlotte address, the mountain address, the car, and whether it runs. We vet the carrier before it ever touches your car, and the driver and truck are confirmed before pickup.

You get a pickup window and an expected delivery window before the truck leaves Charlotte. If something changes on the road, you hear it from us first. The order shows up in our client portal at fctorders.com, where you sign in with your email and a 6-digit code, watch the driver's location while they are driving, and download the delivery BOL once the car is unloaded in the mountains.

Trailer choice for a mountain move

Open trailers carry most cars up to Asheville and back. For a classic, an exotic or a car that would rather stay clean on the climb, ask for enclosed transport. A car that does not run can still go, but it changes the equipment the carrier brings, so tell us up front and we will tell you plainly what is possible. Before pickup, read how to get your car ready.

Charlotte to Asheville questions

Can you deliver to Hendersonville or Black Mountain instead of Asheville?

Yes. Hendersonville sits on I-26 south of Asheville and Black Mountain sits on I-40 east of it, so both are on the way. Give us the exact address and we plan the drop there.

My address is up a steep, narrow road. Can the hauler reach it?

Maybe not. Tell us about the road when you ask for a quote, and we work out a meeting spot with the carrier on a road the truck can use.

Do you move cars from Asheville down to Charlotte too?

Yes. Mountain dealers send trades down to Charlotte stores, and people leaving the mountains ship cars the other way. It is the same lane in reverse.

Can I see where my car is on the way up?

Yes. Sign in at fctorders.com with your email and a 6-digit code to see the driver's location while they are driving and the delivery BOL when the car arrives.
