Glossary of Car shipping

1. Auto Transport Carrier: A company or individual that provides the actual transport service, usually owning and operating their own trucks.

2. Bill of Lading (BOL): A legal document between the shipper and carrier detailing the type, quantity, and destination of the goods being transported. It also serves as a receipt of shipment and can be used to inspect a vehicle before and after transport for damages.

3. Broker: An individual or firm that arranges transactions between a buyer and a seller for a commission when the deal is executed. In car shipping, brokers connect customers with carriers.

4. Door-to-Door Shipping: A service where the transport company picks up and delivers the vehicles as close to the customer’s specified address as possible.

5. Enclosed Transport: A type of transport where vehicles are shipped inside an enclosed trailer, protecting them from external elements and debris.

6. In-Transit: The period during which a vehicle is being transported from its pickup location to its destination.

7. Open Transport: The most common method of shipping a vehicle, where cars are transported on open trailers.

8. Placard: A sign typically placed on the outside of a transport vehicle indicating the nature of the cargo and the associated risks, especially for hazardous materials.

10. RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off): A type of ship designed to carry wheeled cargo like cars, trucks, and trailers that are driven on and off the ship on ramps.

11. Terminal-to-Terminal Shipping: A service where the customer drops off and picks up their vehicle from large storage facilities or hubs.

12. Tow Away Service: A service where vehicles are towed rather than driven or hauled.

13. Vehicle Inspection Report: A document detailing the condition of the vehicle at both the time of pickup and delivery.

14. Drop and Hook: A trucking term where the driver drops off a loaded trailer at a destination and hooks up to another, already-loaded trailer to continue another journey.

15. Dispatch: The act of assigning a driver and truck to transport a vehicle or set of vehicles from point A to point B.
